Overview
Refurbishment of the Cantilupe, Mortimer & Jenny Lind Ward
and Communal areas at Stonebow Unit, Hereford County Hospital
Description
J. Harper & Sons (Leominster) Ltd successfully tendered and were awarded the first phase refurbishment of the Stonebow Unit, Hereford in 2010. The works required the complete refurbishment of the first floor ward, upgrading mechanical and electrical installations and finishes to bring them in-line with current healthcare standards.
The facility remained in full occupational use during the works and therefore close co-ordination and communication with the Hospital Teams were fundamental to the project’s success.
The extensive knowledge of mechanical and electrical co-ordination, nurse call, staff panic alarms, fire alarms, data, electrical distribution and ventilation to current healthcare standards were vitally important. Together with the understanding of carrying out refurbishement projects within occupied premises, with extremely high levels of existing hospital operation requirements (infection control, shut- off permits, traffic management, patient confidentiality, noise, dust and access requirements) being delivered to the satisfaction of all parties.
J.Harper & Sons used their existing knowledge and relationships with subcontractors and supply chain partners. This included specialist IPS systems, ironmongery, joinery, furniture, mechanical and electrical specialists together with prduct specification being reviewed and amended to meet anti-ligature and infection control, with health and safety and facility operations being paramount and at all times a prerequisite.
The successful completion of phase 1 resulted in three further phases being undertaken in 2011 and 2012, including an intensively difficult internal refurbishement of the communal area which formed the only access into the wards with intense co-ordination required between the Healthcare staff and Harper’s Management Team.
All four phases were finished on time and to an extremely high level of finish and within cost budgets set, resulting in further projects being undertaken for Wye Valley Primary Care Trust.
